Healthcare-first decision (read first)
Ospedale Sant'Anna (San Fermo della Battaglia) has a full 24/7 ER ~10–15 min from Como city and Cernobbio. The mid-lake villages (Bellagio, Varenna) are 40+ km / a slow ferry from that ER — fine to visit, wrong to sleep in. Base entirely in Como/Cernobbio; ferry up-lake for the sights.
The anchor stay — the honest villa split
- Villa d'Este, Cernobbio (dream icon) — a 16th-c. grande-dame with the floating pool,
$978–2,500/night. Eight nights blows the budget ($9,600/couple lodging alone), but it's near the ER. - Hotel Villa Cipressi, Varenna (in-budget unique) — a frescoed 15th–19th-c. villa with terraced gardens, ~$390–450/night — but mid-lake, ~40 km from the ER.
Recommended: 2 splurge nights at Villa d'Este (Aug 29–31, also near the ER) in two Classic lake-view rooms, then 6 nights at a Como-city lakefront hotel (~$250–350/night, walkable, A/C + window screens, 10 min to the ER). Amanda gets the grande-dame villa; Maria stays near care throughout. (If you prefer Cipressi's magic, do it as a daytime visit on the Varenna ferry day.)
Getting there
No DEN→Milan nonstop. Best: DEN→Frankfurt or Munich nonstop overnight Fri Aug 28, short hop to Milan Malpensa (MXP), land midday Sat Aug 29. From MXP: car-free is Malpensa Express → change at Saronno → Como Lago (~1h30), but with luggage + a pregnant traveler a pre-booked private transfer to Cernobbio (~50–60 min, ~$140–180) is the one place I'd break car-free for comfort. Return Sun Sep 6.
Day by day
- Sat Aug 29 — Arrive. Private transfer to Villa d'Este; gardens stroll, terrace aperitivo. (Pack picaridin/DEET — Lombardy had ~500 West Nile cases in 2025; confirm screened windows.)
- Sun Aug 30 — Villa d'Este day. Floating pool (Kieran's heaven), spa, gardens; Davis can book a lake kayak/speedboat hour.
- Mon Aug 31 — Move to Como city + old town. 10-min taxi; Como Duomo, medieval lanes, the Silk Museum — flat, shaded, Amanda-led.
- Tue Sep 1 — Brunate funicular. The 1894 funicular up in 7 min (Maria/Kieran ride + panorama café); Davis + Amanda walk the ridge path to the Volta lighthouse. Afternoon: Lido di Villa Olmo pool/lake club.
- Wed Sep 2 — Ferry: Lenno & Villa del Balbianello. The famous lakeside gardens (Star Wars/Bond villa), mostly shaded with benches — pace it for Maria. Ferry back.
- Thu Sep 3 — Ferry: Varenna + the animal day. Villa Cipressi & Villa Monastero gardens, then Castello di Vezio's falconry show — hawks, owls, eagles soaring over the lake (animals, no bees; ferry-reachable). (The castle path has steps — Maria can stay on Varenna's flat lakefront.)
- Fri Sep 4 — Davis's adventure (Valtellina) + relaxation for the rest. Davis: Fly Emotion zipline + Railzip (⚠️ not fully car-free — train Como→Lecco→Morbegno ~2h + a taxi up; confirm 2026 operating dates). Others: spa + Villa Carlotta gardens (short ferry) or a pure lido day.
- Sat Sep 5 — Milan day (~40 min train). Duomo + rooftop, the Galleria, lunch, Amanda's museum/shops; optional Milan Acquario Civico (flat, cool). Evening train back, farewell lakefront dinner.
- Sun Sep 6 — Depart. Private transfer Como→MXP, fly home.

Animals — the honest read
Como is genuinely thin on animals. The best on-theme, car-free, no-bees option is the Castello di Vezio falconry over Varenna (Sep 3); Milan's Acquario Civico is the urban backup. Horse stables exist but cluster at the far north end — skippable. Don't expect a zoo day.

Verdict: the most beautiful lake-and-villa option with the ferries as a daily experience — but the genuine icon (Villa d'Este) is a 1–2 night splurge not an 8-night base, animals are thin (lean on the falconry), and the mosquito caution + a couple of car flags are real.
